I've just read Packt Publishing's Learning Joomla! 1.5 Extension Development by Joseph L. LeBlanc. LeBlanc takes us step-by-step through the building of a Restaurant Reviews Component along with Modules & Plugins. By using this example he is able to demonstrate the various methods and skills needed to develop these extensions within the Joomla 1.5 enviroment. It is a good grounding in the subject but LeBlanc does assume you have a good knowledge of php programming. If not I think you will be struggling to understand many of the concepts as the book is not really written for a beginner. Packt Publishing's Learning Joomla! 1.5 Extension Development can though be used by those interested in developing a new Component, Module or Extension or in adapting existing extensions for their own uses. Even if you've never considered developing your own extensions, by reading and understanding how the Joomla 1.5 extension system works, you will be better placed to work and adapt existing extensions. At times it can seem quite a quick gallop through the the development process and it's not a book just to sit down and read. But you can use and build all the extensive examples within a Joomla test setup and this is the "hands on" method to learn the concepts behind the Joomla 1.5 extension philosophy. So first bone up on your PHP & SQL skills, then start on this book. Get it from Packt Publishing who have a huge range of specialist IT and Technology publications.
