No thumbnail images plus the no lightbox image in the VirtueMart details view is one of the most asked questions on the VirtueMart forums.And one of the least answered. 
This really is a confusing one and the VirtueMart forum is full of answers like "this has already been answered" or "it's a permissions problem". Well actually it is a permissions problem but not in the way you would expect!. The permissions in question are too liberal! Check your "components" folder and you'll probably find it's attributes are set to 777. Normally this would be fine if not a bit of a security risk but it really does kill your category thumbnails, various other VirtueMart images like the Buy buttons and the lightbox popups. Return the attribute back to 755 and amazingly all your problems disappear! The actual error will be in the server logs as - SoftException in Application.cpp:544: Directory "/home/gjcwebdesign/public_html/components" is writeable by group This means that your server’s apache configuration doesn’t allow you to make folders writable by group. components 755 recursive?
i have the same problem,
but the attributes of my component folder is 755.
i try to change to 777, its not work, and then i changed back to 755 still not work.
could you help me plz..
i put joomla to a directory
